District of Champions Thanks Members of MPD, FEMS, and Other First Responders

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Washington Nationals announced a donation of Nationals World Series Champion branded gear and apparel to members of the Metropolitan Police Department, DC Fire and EMS, and other District public safety agencies to thank them for protecting the safety of residents, workers, and visitors throughout the COVID-19 health emergency and for their heroic actions defending the nation’s capital on January 6, 2021.

“The Nationals helped make us the District of Champions. Now, we’re working together to ensure we are the District of Comebacks,” said Mayor Bowser. “We are grateful to the entire Nationals organization for their generosity in recognizing and thanking our first responders for their continued service and sacrifice. We can’t wait to be back at Nats Park celebrating together again.”

“Thank you to all the first responders throughout the District who are working tirelessly to keep our community safe and healthy,” said Mark D. Lerner, managing principal owner of the Nationals. “We are forever indebted to you for your extraordinary service over the past ten months. We hope that you will wear your World Series Champions gear with pride – you all are true champions!”

The Washington Nationals have made significant philanthropic contributions to communities in the District. During the COVID-19 health emergency, Nationals Philanthropies has supported over 1.5 million meals for food insecure residents – delivered via impact grants, the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy farmers market, and World Central Kitchen operations at Nationals Park. In total, Nationals Philanthropies has disbursed 50 community impact grants to nonprofit partners across the region to support critical programs and services.

In previous years, Nationals Philanthropies, in partnership with the Bowser Administration, has opened and renovated two fields through the Legacy Fields program – Bryce Harper Field at the Takoma Community Center in 2018 and Ryan Zimmerman Field at the Randall Recreation Center in 2016. For seven consecutive years, the Nationals have also served as the primary sponsor for DC Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children and teens to read throughout the summer and avoid the “summer slide.”

Yesterday, Mayor Bowser and the Hospitality Alliance, comprised of Destination DC, Events DC, Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington and the Hotel Association of Washington, D.C., announced the “DC Salutes You” program, offering first responders and members of the military special deals and discounts at DC hotels, restaurants, attractions, and local businesses. Current deals in each type of business follow the latest COVID-19 health and safety guidelines and are listed on washington.org/dcsalutesyou. Businesses are invited to offer deals through the end of the year so they are in place as soon as current guidelines allow for visitors to experience them.
