History of the Office of the City Administrator

The position of the City Administrator is established under the Home Rule Act of 1973. The City Administrator is appointed by the Mayor and, because the position is created under the Home Rule Act, is not subject to confirmation by the DC Council. Serving as the District Government’s chief administrative officer, the City Administrator oversees the day-to-day municipal operations, coordinates agency activities, and ensures the effective implementation of policies and programs.
