Joint Statement from Mayor Muriel Bowser, Mayor Steve Benjamin, and Canadian Ambassador David MacNaughton on the USCM Welcome Reception

Friday, January 25, 2019

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Following the 87th Winter Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM), Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, DC, and David MacNaughton, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States co-hosted for a second year the USCM Welcome Reception at the Embassy of Canada.

This year, a delegation of three Canadian mayors, led by Bonnie Crombie Mayor of Mississauga, along with 286 Mayors from the United States attended the USCM to join forces and collaborate on solutions regarding urban policies and best practices that act on key issues such as the environment, clean water, transportation, and community development.

As drivers of economic growth and innovation, cities have a strong voice that can impact governments at the national level. During the panel discussion North American Mayors’ Alliance on Trade: Understanding USMCA, mayors have spoken in support of the USMCA and acknowledged that the new trade agreement will bring certainty to businesses in our metropolitan areas and strengthen our close economic ties.

“We are proud that over many years and through many shared successes and hardships, the U.S-Canadian relationship has persisted and developed into the vibrant partnership that it is today, one that far surpasses trade and economics and is grounded in unity and respect. As American and Canadian Mayors join together this week to celebrate the inclusivity, innovation, and compassion that binds our nations together, we do so knowing the important impact cities across our continent can have when we work together to give more people a fair shot. Thank you Ambassador MacNaughton for co-hosting our gathering and I look forward to our continued collaboration,” said Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, DC.

"Canada and the U.S. share a long history of collaboration at the local level, and we'd like to thank the Embassy of Canada and Ambassador MacNaughton for hosting the U.S. Conference of Mayors for the second year in celebration of city-to-city diplomacy in North America. We look forward to a continued productive and fruitful relationship," said Steve Benjamin, Mayor of Columbia (SC) and President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

“Canada and the National Capital Region enjoy a unique relationship that is rooted in economic ties and shared values. We are proud to co-host this event with Mayor Bowser for the 2019 U.S. Conference of Mayors. It’s a great opportunity to renew and deepen the successful bilateral relationship between Canada and the United States. I look forward to continuing our work together promoting economic growth on both sides of the border and collaborating on improving the lives of our citizens,” said David MacNaughton, Ambassador of Canada in the United States.
