Highlights Unprecedented Investments in Affordable Housing for DC Residents during Housing Week 2017

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Monday, October 2, at 11:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will highlight the Administration’s historic investments in affordable housing at the groundbreaking ceremony of a new affordable housing development on the site of the former R.L. Christian Library, 1300 H Street NE. The 38,545 square-foot, mixed-use development will feature 33 housing units – all affordable – and 5,905 square feet of ground-level retail spaces.

Since taking office, Mayor Bowser has made an unprecedented $100 million annual investment into the Housing Production Trust Fund; produced and preserved more than 4,000 affordable rental and homeownership units across all eight wards; helped nearly 3,000 families avoid DC homeless services system; connected more than 1,800 veterans to permanent housing; and more than 5,300 affordable housing units – capable of housing over 13,200 residents – are in the pipeline. In Fiscal Year 2017, the District reached a new benchmark by investing more than $138.5 million from the Housing Production Trust Fund to produce and preserve 1,563 units that will house nearly 4,000 residents.

The groundbreaking of the affordable housing units at R.L. Christian Library will kick off Housing Week 2017, a combined effort to highlight the remarkable progress the Administration has made to produce and preserve affordable housing across the nation’s capital. Celebrating the impact of groundbreaking developments in shaping the District’s housing programs, Housing Week 2017 will continue Mayor Bowser’s efforts to make the investments and policies necessary to ensure Washington, DC remains affordable for seniors, singles, and families.
