Nearly $2 Million Project in Takoma Will Create Safer Infrastructure for Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Motorists

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) broke ground on the 4th Street/Cedar Street/Blair Road NW Intersection Improvement Project in Ward 4, which will advance the Mayor’s Vision Zero goals by creating a safer passage for all users of the roadway, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicle operators.

“By deploying people and resources to areas that need them most, we’re creating safer streets across all eight wards to meet our Vision Zero goals and make sure people feel safe moving through our city," said Mayor Bowser. “This safety improvement project represents a $1.9 million investment to make it safer and easier to navigate for the 20,000 drivers who use this intersection every day, as well as for cyclists, pedestrians, scooter riders, and everyone else.”

Once complete, 4th Street, NW will be converted to a one-way southbound street with a dedicated bike lane and the Blair Road/Cedar Street NW intersection will be reconfigured to minimize vehicle and bicycle-pedestrian conflicts. The project also includes high visibility crosswalks, infrastructure that is compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act, upgraded traffic signals, new parking meters and traffic control devices, and additional stormwater management and landscaping.

“Mayor Bowser has challenged us to make certain that all of our infrastructure projects are designed to improve safety for all Washingtonians,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “This project advances our commitment to make our streets accessible to all users of the roadway.”

Construction is expected to be completed by Spring 2020.

Other project improvements include:

  • Re-constructing pavement, median and sidewalk sections including new accessible curb ramps and a new ornamental median safety fence at Cedar Street;
  • Widening the roadway to provide adequate turning movements for WMATA buses;
  • Upgrading traffic signals, parking meters and other traffic control devices;
  • Installing new street lights (poles, arms, and luminaires);
  • Adjusting and upgrading water and sewer lines as well as new fire hydrants; and
  • Installing low impact stormwater management facilities and green planting areas.
