Mayor Bowser to Host Mayor-Council Breakfast, Discuss Education Reform & Launch CPR Training Initiative

Monday, October 26, 2015

(Washington, DC) – Tomorrow at 9 am., Mayor Muriel Bowser will host a Mayor-Council Breakfast at the John A. Wilson Building. At the Breakfast, Mayor Bowser, Deputy Mayor for Education Jennifer Niles, OSSE Superintendent Hanseul Kang, DC Public Schools (DCPS) Chancellor Kaya Henderson and DC Public Charter School Board Executive Director Scott Pearson will brief the DC Councilmembers on the results of the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment, which replaced the DC CAS as the annual standardized test for District students. Adoption of the test is part of the Bowser Administration’s commitment to education reform. The Mayor and education leaders will also highlight the work of DCPS and DC Public Charter Schools principals as part of National Principals Month.

Additionally, Mayor Bowser and DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DCFEMS) Chief Gregory Dean will launch “Hands on Hearts,” a new campaign to train 5,000 community members per year in hands-only CPR and Automated External Defibrillator awareness.  Hands on Hearts initiative partners, as well as recent survivors of sudden cardiac arrest saved by citizen bystanders and DCFEMS will be in attendance.  Following the Breakfast, DCFEMS will train Mayor Bowser and DC Councilmembers in these techniques, which involves giving chest compressions to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest without using artificial respiration. Studies have found that compression-only CPR performed immediately may increase the survival rate for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. The training session will be open press.
