Mayor Bowser Invites Residents to Kick Off the New Year by Participating in the #FITDC Fresh Start Virtual 5K

Residents of All Ages Encouraged to Run or Walk Suggested Routes Across All Eight Wards

(Washington, DC) – Mayor Muriel Bowser is inviting residents to celebrate the New Year at the 7th Annual #FITDC Fresh Start 5K, which will be held virtually for the first time. Instead of gathering at one location, residents are encouraged to run or walk in their neighborhood, at a DC Public Schools (DCPS) or a Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) track, or along a suggested route available through the sign-up portal. Residents can register online and track their run time through the online portal to compare and connect with family and friends. Participants who register can pick up a free #FITDC Fresh Start T-shirt and medal at select DPR recreation centers in the days leading up to the 5K.

“2020 was all about finding new ways to stay connected, and now we’re keeping one of our favorite traditions going by making it virtual,” said Mayor Bowser. “With the arrival of a safe and effective vaccine, we go into 2021 with a renewed sense of hope and a commitment to work together to finally end this pandemic. Starting the New Year with a 5K is the perfect way to kick off a healthier 2021. So, mask up, social distance, and pick a spot for your 5K.”

#FITDC Fresh Start 5K partners include Aetna, DPR, Vida Fitness, Pacers Running, and various running groups from across the District. Before, during, and after their run/walk, residents are encouraged to tag @myfitdc and use the hashtag #FRESHSTART5K2021.

To prepare residents for 2021, Mayor Bowser has relaunched #FITDC3, a citywide initiative to provide simplified health and wellness during these difficult times. The goal of #FITDC3 is to strengthen every body, empower every mind, and engage every community within the District. In partnership with AETNA, and executed by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, #FITDC3 will provide residents with free access to elevated health and wellness resources that support physical fitness, mental health, and stronger immune systems. This year’s Fresh Start 5K run/walk will be the first major virtual event of the #FITDC3 campaign.
