Mayor Bowser Meets with Beijing Mayor, Renews Sister City Agreement

Monday, November 9, 2015

(Beijing, China) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser met with Beijing Mayor Wang Anshun to discuss Chinese investment opportunities in the District.  The Mayors also renewed a Sister City agreement between the two nation's capitals.

“It was an honor to meet with Mayor Wang Anshun as we look to grow our cities' economies and strengthen our partnership,” said Mayor Bowser. “Our delegation made it clear to Beijing that the District is open for business and now is the best time for them to invest in the nation's capital. The extension of the Sister City agreement will also build on our shared priorities - arts and culture, technology, education, and tourism.”

Mayor Bowser and Mayor Wang Anshun discussed a variety of issues, including the District's efforts to advance sustainability, expand its technology and innovation sector, and improve its transportation system.  Other topics of discussion included foreign direct investment opportunities and collaborative educational relationships between District universities and their Chinese counterparts.

The Sister City agreement between the District and Beijing calls for mutual cooperation in a variety of areas, including increased opportunity between businesses as well as information exchange on city development programs and projects in both cities.

Following the discussion and a gift exchange with Mayor Wang Anshun, a meeting with Beijing Municipal Government Leadership took place to address city successes and opportunities of mutual advantage around economic development, trade, innovation, education and tourism.

Beijing is the first of two major stops for Mayor Bowser and her delegation to China. The trip continues through November 14th as part of an effort to attract more foreign direct investment in the District, generate local jobs, expand trade, and market DC as a primary destination to China.
