Monday, November 9, 2015

(Beijing, China) – On her first day in Beijing, Mayor Bowser met with US Ambassador to China Max Baucus to discuss US diplomacy in China, opportunities for District businesses in China, and the growing economic and political relationship between the two countries.

Mayor Bowser and Ambassador Baucus also discussed the US-China Bilateral Investment Treaty ("BIT") and its potential to provide significant opportunities for American businesses. The United States and China continue to make progress with the "BIT", which establishes binding rules on the treatment of foreign investors and their investments.

The US Embassy in Beijing is the second largest American diplomatic mission in the world. This was the first official meeting between Mayor Bowser and Ambassador Baucus.

The Mayor and Ambassador met as part of the District's trade mission to China.  The purpose of the trip is to create District jobs and drive economic development by increasing Chinese investment in DC, in both the EB-5 program and direct investments. EB-5 investments have yielded $295 million in investments in projects in the District, leveraging as much as $1 billion dollars of development.
