Statement from Mayor Bowser on Attending the Presidential Citizens Medal Award Ceremony to Honor Individuals Who Demonstrated Courage and Selflessness During the January 6, 2021 Insurrection

Friday, January 6, 2023

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser attended the Presidential Citizens Medal Award Ceremony to honor individuals who demonstrated courage and selflessness during the events surrounding the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and released the following statement:

“Two years ago, our nation watched in horror as our democracy was attacked. We worried for our elected leaders and the staff inside the Capitol, for the first responders who were coming face to face with the violence, and we worried about what a violent insurrection meant for the future of American democracy. Still, I remember the pride I felt watching as the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the Capitol, their bright yellow coats a symbol of hope amidst chaos. Today, I join President Biden in sharing our gratitude for everyone, including the 14 people honored today, who came together to save our democracy on January 6, 2021 and in the days and weeks after.”
