Statement on Washington, DC Admission Act Reaching 200 Cosponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives

Tuesday, March 5, 2019

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser released the following statement on Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s DC statehood bill (H.R. 51) reaching 200 cosponsors.

“DC is grateful to Congresswoman Norton for her steadfast work to secure this historic milestone for DC statehood. We particularly want to thank Representatives Mike Levin (D-CA) and Antonio Delgado (D-NY) for being the two members who got us to 200 cosponsors.

“This past weekend, I was proud to be with Representatives Levin and Delgado on the congressional delegation trip to Selma, Alabama, where we commemorated Bloody Sunday and the epic struggle to secure the right to vote for African Americans. More than 50 years later, DC residents are in our own unique struggle for voting rights. As we continue our fight to become the 51st state, we draw on the courage of those in the civil rights movement, who never relented in their pursuit of equality.”
