Mayor Bowser to Announce Proposed Changes to Training Regulations for Special Police Officers

(Washington, DC) – Tomorrow at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Kevin Donahue, and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier will announce proposed changes to the eligibility and training requirements for all licensed special police officers (SPOs) in the District.

The Bowser Administration has been reviewing the regulations that impact more than 17,000 special police officers and security officers work throughout the District. The proposed regulations will require all SPOs to receive increased levels of incoming and on-the-job training to ensure the safety of our residents, businesses, and visitors.

The announcement will also honor Stephen T. Johns, a SPO at the Holocaust Museum who was killed on June 10, 2009, during an attack on the museum. The shooter was then subdued by two other special police officers, Harry Weeks and Jason “Mac” McCuiston.
