Mayor Bowser to Announce Washington, DC as the World’s First Platinum LEED Recipient

Wednesday, August 30, 2017
Certification is the Highest Available for Cities from the U.S. Green Building Council

(WASHINGTON, DC)  — On Thursday, August 31, at 1 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will announce the District as the first city in the world to receive the platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Cities Platinum award, the highest certification given by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The LEED program measures the District’s sustainability across an array of metrics such as energy, water, waste and transportation. The program also factored in the human experience, which includes education, prosperity, equity, health and safety.

Since taking office, Mayor Bowser has focused on building a more eco-friendly city and promoting the green economy. Earlier this year, Mayor Bowser launched Sustainable 2.0 to incorporate innovative technologies that will monitor the District’s progress. Since the launch, 65 percent of neighborhoods are walkable, 58 percent of commuter trips are by biking, walking, or using the transit, and greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 24 percent. Mayor Bowser also launched Climate Ready DC – the city’s strategic plan to adapt to changing climate, entered into one of the largest municipal onsite solar projects in the nation, completed the largest wind power purchase agreement by an American city, awarded $13.2 million in solar-related grants to fund the expansion of solar capacity in Washington, DC, and pledged to uphold the commitments in the Paris Climate Accord to reduce greenhouse gases by 80 percent by year 2050.
