Mayor Bowser Awards $9.3 Million in Grants to Support Afterschool Programs for District Youth

Thursday, September 17, 2020
Funds Will Benefit 11,000 District Youth for the 2020-2021 School Year

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser awarded $9.38 million to 92 non-profit organizations that support more than 11,000 youth in the District with access to quality out-of-school time (OST) programming. The funding will be awarded from the Office of Out of School Time Grants and Youth Outcomes (OST Office) for Fiscal Year 2021. Programs will provide a variety of virtual and in-person environments. All grantees are expected to resume in-person programming when health conditions and local guidance permits.

“We know that out-of-school programs provide our young people with academic and enrichment activities that encourage character development and prepare them for school and life outside the classroom,” said Mayor Bowser. “These grants will continue our efforts to create safe and educational spaces for youth while supporting local nonprofits and creating job opportunities for residents.”

Studies show that children and youth that actively participate in quality afterschool programs are more likely to have higher graduation rates, better school attendance, and an increase in social-emotional development. Since October 2017, the OST Office has worked to improve the quality of OST programs in the District by administering training and workshops to youth development workers to enhance their skills, supporting organizations with capacity building and working with youth-serving organizations to enhance program design and implementation. The OST Office leads the Learn24 network, which consists of OST programs, government agencies, the Commission on Out of School Time Grants and Youth Outcomes, the Institute for Youth Development and other key stakeholders that are committed to ensuring all District of Columbia youth have access to a quality OST program.

These funds allocated by the Bowser Administration will help school-age youth in the District stay engaged and connected with community-based organizations and nonprofit organizations through academic and enrichment programming.
