Mayor Bowser to Break Ground, Cut Ribbon On More Than 100 Affordable Housing Units

Thursday, June 22, 2017

(Washington, DC) – On Friday, June 23, Mayor Muriel Bowser will break ground on a newly renovated 19-unit affordable housing apartment building at 4000 Kansas Avenue, NW, in Ward 4. The Mayor will also celebrate the renovation of the historic Phyllis Wheatley YWCA in Ward 6, a modernized facility with 84 units of affordable housing for households at or below 30 percent of the area median income (AMI).

Mayor Bowser will also highlight the increase of aid for the Home Purchase Assistance Program (HPAP). Borrowers can now get up to $84,000 in down payment and closing cost assistance from HPAP. Additionally, the Mayor’s FY18 Budget includes $1 million to expand the Employer Assisted Housing Program (EAHP) for first responders and teachers.

Since taking office in 2015, the Mayor invested $100 million annually in the Housing Production Trust Fund (HPTF) and led the nation last year in closing $106 million of HPTF affordable housing deals to produce or preserve more than 1,200 affordable housing units in all 8 wards. More than 5,000 affordable housing units, capable of housing nearly 12,000 DC residents, are in the development pipeline.
