Mayor Bowser Hosts Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards

Honorees Represent a Variety of Creative Disciplines

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Tonight, Mayor Bowser and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities presented the 32nd Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards at the historic Lincoln Theatre. The annual awards celebrate and honor outstanding achievements in the arts, humanities, and creative industries.

“It is because of all the people who dedicate themselves to developing their talents and sharing their gifts with our community that Washington, DC is the greatest city for the arts and humanities and the capital of creativity,” said Mayor Bowser. “Tonight, I am proud to celebrate and honor the artists and professionals who continue to inspire our city.”

The winners of the 32nd Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards are:

Excellence in the Creative Industries: Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital
Excellence in the Humanities: Kitty Felde
The Larry Neal Writer’s Award: Taylor Johnson
Excellence in Arts Education: Sitar Arts Center
Excellence in Visual Arts: Katherine Tzu-Ian Mann
Excellence in Performing Arts: Dance Place

In addition, the following individuals were recognized with Honor Awards:

Visionary Leadership: Ari Roth
Distinguished Honor: Davey Yarborough
Lifetime Achievement: Wilhelmina Cole Holladay

“The District is home to some of the brightest talents in the nation and the world,” said Arthur Espinoza, Jr., Executive Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. “As part of the 202Creates initiative to showcase our city’s creative sector, the Mayor’s Arts Awards recognize the immeasurable contributions that our arts, humanities and creative professionals make to the economic development and overall quality of life in the District of Columbia,”

Throughout September, the Bowser Administration is celebrating 202Creates, a month-long showcase of the District’s diverse and vibrant creative community. Home to 2,400 arts-related businesses, Washington, DC ranks first in creative businesses per capita, and the District’s creative economy generates more than 120,000 jobs, with 1,800 creative jobs added in just the last year. Throughout the year, 202Creates promotes and amplifies Washington, DC’s creative economy through digital media marketing, original television programming, and paid performance opportunities for DC’s creatives. To date, 202Creates has supported more than 4,000 events.
