District to Offer Free Children’s Books Through Books to Birth Program

Tomorrow, February 4th at 11:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser along with DC Public Library Director Richard Reyes-Gavilan, will announce a new component of the Sing Talk and Read (STAR) Program called Books From Birth. The program, introduced to the DC Council by Councilmember Charles Allen, will send every child in the District under the age of five a free book each month. With the potential for newborns in the District to receive more than 50 books by the time they turn five, this program will substantially impact the city’s work to create better educational outcomes for children and families in Washington, DC.

This event is part of Education Week, Mayor Bowser’s week-long effort to highlight how the District is accelerating the pace of school reform and creating pathways to the middle class for District residents.
