Mayor Bowser Announces $47 Million to Benefit Residents in All 8 Wards

Friday, October 9, 2015
Reprogramming will utilize funds from sponsorship agreement and FY15 underspending.

Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced $47 million in funding for community and other critical investments. The funds were assembled from agency underspending from the 2015 fiscal year and a sponsorship agreement emanating from the DC United Stadium development.

The Mayor’s action will support education, enhance city infrastructure, improve parks, and bolster small businesses.

“My team worked closely with members of the Council to identify enhancements that will benefit the communities they represent, making this effort a partnership across District government and ultimately placing more residents on a pathway to the middle class,” said Mayor Bowser.

This reprogramming was made possible, in part, by a $25 million dollar agreement [PDF] with Pepco, majority landowner of Buzzard Point - site of DC United Stadium - for future sponsorship opportunities on District-owned assets associated with sports and entertainment.

“I have always said that we could get a better deal to build the stadium for DC United – and that’s exactly what we are doing,” continued Mayor Bowser. “Through ongoing negotiations, we are now in a position to reduce the District’s direct investment in the soccer stadium by $25 million.  The stadium project will deliver quality jobs for District residents, spur economic opportunity along the Anacostia River, and provide a facility that DC United will call home.”
