Mayor Bowser to Break Ground on Benjamin Orr Elementary School

$47 Million Modernization Project for 77,000 Square-Foot State-Of-The-Art School in Ward 8

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Thursday, May 25, at 10 am., Mayor Muriel Bowser will celebrate the groundbreaking of Benjamin Orr Elementary School, a new 77,000 square-foot building that will include a new computer lab, furniture, a gym, a library, an outdoor learning terrace, and a playground in Ward 8. Designed to meet the LEED Gold Certification for an eco-friendly and energy-efficient environment, the $47 million modernized facility will be ready for students and teachers to occupy for the 2018-2019 school year.

As the fastest improving urban school district in the country, Mayor Bowser’s Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Proposal makes the largest investment in public education in history by spending $1.3 billion for school modernization over six years and an additional $112 million to increase the per student rate to meet the needs of a growing student body.
