(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser named Courtney R. Snowden, Principal at The Raben Group and former Alternate National Committeewoman for the Democratic State Committee, as Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity (DMGEO).
“Deputy Mayor Snowden will lead our efforts to create more opportunities to the middle class for those who are seeking employment or want to start and grow a business. I am happy to deliver on a promise to create a position to ensure that all Washingtonians, regardless of ward or zip code, have secure pathways to the middle class,” said Mayor Bowser.
On the campaign trail, Mayor Bowser announced her plans to create a Deputy Mayor position that focused on creating greater economic opportunity for District residents and businesses. With additional resources and direct oversight from the Mayor’s Office, DMGEO will work to create pathways to the middle class for residents in every corner of the District. The Deputy Mayor will have oversight of the Department of Employment Services (DOES), Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD), Office of African American Affairs, and the Commission on Fatherhood, Men, and Boys. Deputy Mayor Snowden’s start date is Monday, April 13, 2015.
“As a sixth-generation Washingtonian, I understand the beauty and flaws associated with job creation, housing, transportation, and public safety concerns throughout the city. I am looking forward to working with this administration to enhance our neighborhoods in all corners of this world-class city,” said Snowden.
Most recently, Snowden served as principal at The Raben Group, a premiere progressive government relations firm, advising the firm’s clients on a variety of public policy issues through direct lobbying, strategic planning, and coalition building.
Snowden is a graduate of DC Public Schools and received her B.A. in Political Science in 2000 from Beloit College in Beloit, WI. After graduating, Snowden returned home to the District to join the legislative staff of Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) on Capitol Hill.
Snowden lives in the Deanwood neighborhood of Ward 7 with her young son Malik.
